Personal Statement Writing Advice: Tip 9

Develop a Writing Style

Admissions essays or personal statements are invariably presented in the first person. However, avoid starting each sentence with a repetitive “I” statement, as your sentence structure will appear unimaginative and pedantic when presented in this way. Write a clear and concise introductory paragraph. The introductory paragraph commonly states your interest in applying to the graduate school of choice, while it also often briefly outlines your major academic achievements to date (most notably undergraduate or other degrees).

Many applicants choose in their opening paragraph to provide a brief summary of the themes that they plan to discuss throughout the main body of the essay. This approach is, indeed, standard. However, be cautious of summarizing your main themes in your introductory paragraph, as the constraints of a restricted word count often make this practice inadvisable.

Sample Wording
My goal in enrolling in a Masters of Liberal Arts graduate program is not entirely vocational. Rather, my interest focuses specifically on the development of analytical and critical thinking skills so necessary to a commitment to lifelong learning. To this end, the highly academic and interdisciplinary course of study offered in the Minnesota University Master of Liberal Arts program very much appeals to me. [Note that the word "I" is used infrequently.]
