Personal Statement Writing Advice: Tip 8

Plan Each Paragraph

Plan each paragraph that you wish to include in the main body of your paper. Develop one major theme in each of the paragraphs that you include. Begin each paragraph with a clear topic sentence and then develop the central theme that you wish to convey with supportive evidence or ideas. Never present your material in a disjointed or disorganized manner, as this will inevitably fail to impress the admissions committee reviewing your submission.
Remember: admissions committees assume that thoughtful organization in written composition may well translate into thoughtful organizational skills in academic endeavors. Present each and every paragraph in a clear and concise way and avoid repetition. Each paragraph must express and develop a specific thought or idea that you wish to convey. Many stylists recommend that you briefly restate the main themes presented in your paper in your final concluding paragraph. Although this is common practice, you may find that the constraints of a limited word count make this practice inadvisable. Instead, word your final paragraph in such a way that you provide a “rounding off” to your overall thesis, by providing a sense of resolution to the themes you have discussed. Wherever possible, end on a “high note” or end with a flourish.

Sample Wording
