Personal Statement Writing Advice: Tip 5

Add Specific Details

Be sure to expand upon your reasons for selecting the specific graduate school or program of your choice. The admissions committee reading your submission will be keenly interested in the reasons you outline and will weigh the validity and sincerity of your statements. Mention the specific details of the curriculum that attract you, but avoid obsequious references to the prestigious reputation of the program you have chosen. Fawning, dutiful, or obsequious comments rarely impress astute admissions-committee members.

Research the school and program of your choice extremely thoroughly, and, wherever possible, make specific reference to any faculty members you hope to work with. Explain how and why the work of this faculty member interests you. Most graduate schools emphasize research as an essential (and often major) part of their programs of study. Be sure to discuss the particular area of research that interests you and, where possible, the specifics of the field that you hope to explore. If possible, make reference to the faculty members whom you anticipate working with in your research endeavors.

Sample Wording
My proposed area of studies is urban spatial planning, with a specific focus on the complex relationship between human settlement and urbanized land use. The academic focus of Dr. Jim Jenson’s work is of great interest to me at this time, and I am hoping to have the opportunity to work closely with him during the course of my thesis research. [Note that the faculty member is mentioned by name.]
