Be Positive
Maintain a positive, energetic tone throughout your graduate admission essay. Emphasize your accomplishments and your achievements. Resist dwelling on failure, defeat, or negativity. Wherever possible, avoid discussing excuses (such as family upheaval or sickness) that you feel may account for your poor academic standings.
 

Discuss your motivations and your goals in a positive and hopeful way, and outline the avenues you anticipate exploring in your efforts to achieve those goals. Applicants often make the mistake of discussing poor academic grades at considerable length. Instead, provide examples of your successes and your strengths.
