Personal Statement Writing Advice: Tip 10

Proofread Your Essay

The use of correct syntax and grammar is essential to a good admissions essay or personal statement. Make sure that you check carefully for any spelling errors. Wherever possible, use a spelling and grammar check on your computer. Ask a friend or colleague to proof read your final draft. Remember: spelling and grammar errors will almost certainly ensure that you will fail to meet admission requirements.

Proof read your final draft a number of times for meaning, clarity and fluency of ideas. Ask a friend or a colleague to help you with this activity, also. Sometimes a fresh “eye” or a new perspective from a reader unfamiliar with your text will help you to detect faulty arguments or unsubstantiated claims inherent to your work. Many a strong candidate have failed to gain admission to a prestigious program because spelling, grammar, or synatical errors remained uncorrected in the final draft submitted.

Sample Wording
